John Robinson

Born in Philadelphia, PA moved to Millbrook, NY in 1959

Lifelong student and teacher of the woodwind family, I have played in most musical contexts – jazz big bands and combos. Classical and traditional ensembles from small chamber groups to local orchestras.
Coached and conducted student saxophone quartets. Instruments played include various clarinets, flutes, and saxophones. In pre-computer days also worked as a musical calligrapher (“Copyist”).

Education:
• Traditional “classical” theory and composition at Hunter College (CCNY) with American composer Louise Talma.
• Jazz studies at The New School in NYC, and Berklee College of Music. Theory, Composition & Arranging, Counterpoint, and Jazz Performance.
• Private clarinet study with Professor Joe Viola and avant-guarde composer/clarinettist Edgar Summerlin.
• Degree in Computer Science/Mathematics from SUNY.
• Thirty one years wih IBM in mainframe systems and security.
• Two years with Xerox in Customer Mainframe Security.

Happily into retirement I’ve taught several courses for Taconic Learning Center in Art History and Musical topics.
